“Girl you look good won’t you back that ass up…” sings LeBron James, ducking into the studio for his British GQ photo shoot, Beats by Dre cans clamped to his ears. “I’m loving Drake right now,” grins the NBA star, explaining his song choice – Take Care‘s stripper anthem “Practice” – as he perches his hulking 6″8 frame on a chair. The two-time NBA MVP and Olympic gold medal holder is in London to promote his new Nike range, including the Lebron 9 he’s currently wearing. However in addition to his show-stopping performances on the court for Miami Heat, James is increasingly known for his off court style, from wearing custom tailoring to games to front row appearances at New York fashion week. As such we took the chance to talk to him about his new menswear store, his Audemars Piguet collection and where an NBA star finds suits…
Pretty much all of my suits are custom made. I’ve got a few from Ralph Lauren and some Tom Ford suits which fit me really well. I’m a big guy and I like to look good, so getting the right fit is important.
My style inspiration? I like the way like old Mafia mob bosses dressed up. They did a great job of looking sharp in jackets and suits,
The first stylish thing I ever bought? When I was drafted back in 2003, I was 18 years old, so I wore sweatsuits and stuff like that. I didn’t buy nice clothing. I was buying T-shirts and jogging stuff – I definitely wasn’t buying slacks! Now that I’m a bit older I appreciate the benefits of dressing well.
I went to New York Fashion Week to see Michael Bastian. I’ve got a lot of his stuff. I’ve got a nice sweater of his that I wore to the show: it looks like a rugby shirt with the wings on the chest.
My style is all about confidence. If a man has a confidence in himself and what he’s wearing, it makes you look a lot better.
I like Polo shirts… and I like Lanvin shirts. Whatever looks good. Paul Smith does a lot of great stuff.
For jeans? I’ve got some APCs, some Levi’s. Again, all custom.
The last thing I bought was my backpack when Nike took us shopping in Barcelona. They took us to this great shopping area and me and my friends bought a lot of clothes. We like fashion, so we like to go shopping from time to time – but after that trip, I don’t want to spend any more right now! [laughs]
I’ve got a lot of watches. I’m an ambassador for Audemars Piguet, so I wear the Legacy and the Grand Prix. I just got the new Carbon Fibre Royal Oak, which I’m wearing today – it’s nice. I got a little watch case – a watch winder – to put them all in at home.
We recently opened Unknwn, a store in Miami. We sell urban wear, tennis shoes, sweaters, jackets, pants. Maybe even a few watches here and there, so we have a little bit of everything.
My feet are size 15. Is it hard to get shoes? Not really – I get mine ordered in for me.
I don’t really have one style. I can wear shorts and a tank from my Nike collection, I can wear a three-piece suit or I can wear a shirt and slacks. I’m pretty flexible. It’s all about confidence, man!
